Pitting corrosion
The most frequently seen corrosion type on aluminum and magnesium alloys.

Center punch
A tool typically used to create large indentations to guide a twist drill.

Exfoliation corrosion
A severe form of intergranular corrosion where the surface grains lift, typically identified by the metal surface being lifted due to corrosion buildup.
Removed section
A type of sectional drawing that reveals internal details of a part by showing a cutaway, often enlarged and displayed beside the main view.
Electrical grounding
The concept of creating a safe electrical connection to a structure or return path.
Electrolyte
The simplest to eliminate of the essential elements required for corrosion.
Bilge areas
Sections within an aircraft where fluids, water, and debris naturally collect.
AN stainless steel bolt
A bolt classified by a single raised line on its head.
Fluid system seal
A component that prevents fluid from passing and keeps contaminants out.
Silver corrosion
Corrosion that typically appears as a dark brown or black film.
Finish marks
Symbols on a technical drawing signify that the surface must be machine-finished.
Ductility
A material property referring to the ability to be stretched or shaped without breaking.
Electrochemical corrosion requirements
The four necessary conditions are an Anode, Cathode, Electrolyte, and Electrical connection.
Ultrasonic inspection
An inspection method using sound waves to detect corrosion or moisture in bonded honeycomb structures.
Offset screwdriver
A type of screwdriver ideal when vertical space is too tight for a standard tool.
Galvanic corrosion
Corrosion resulting from the contact between dissimilar metals in an electrolyte.
Dimension lines
Thin solid lines with arrowheads on each end that indicate where a measurement starts and ends.
Alodizing
A chemical process applied to aluminum to improve paint adherence and boost corrosion resistance.
Flare nut wrench
The type of wrench used to tighten a B-nut on a fluid line.
Standard steel bolt
An aircraft bolt indicated by an asterisk (∗) on the head.
Class 2 rating
In threaded fasteners, this represents a free fit.
Titanium
A non-ferrous metal that has the unique property of being able to be case hardened.
Castle nut
A nut designed with slots for a cotter pin or safety wire to secure it.
Corrosion blending ratio
The standard ratio for an area where corrosion has been removed is a 20 to 1 length-to-depth.
Wiring diagrams
Diagrams that depict all electrical components and circuits in an aircraft using identification codes.
Solid rivet head markings
Used to indicate the material used in the rivet.
NAS close tolerance steel bolt
A bolt identified by an X inside a triangle on the head.
Title block
The section of a drawing used to uniquely identify each aircraft drawing.
Drawing size C
In the universal numbering system, the letter representing a size of 17"×22".
Soft-faced hammers
Tools meant for delicate surfaces and shaping soft metals.
Brake mean effective pressure
The pressure of an engine with 2000 cubic inch displacement producing 800 BHP at 2100 RPM is 160 psi.
