What is DNA
Nucleic acid
What does DNA Do?
Molecule that stores all of the necessary information to control cellular activity- e.g specialisation of cells, arrangement of tissues into organs
What is DNA responsible for?
Controlling the synthesis of protiens
What does DNA stand for?
Deoxyribonucleicacid
Where is DNA found?
In the nucleus of cells
What is a Chromosome
A condensed piece of DNA
How many chromosomes do humans have?
46, humans inherit 23 from the mother and 23 from the father
What is a Gene?
Short segments of code used to create different proteins
What is meant when genes are called hereditary information?
It’s the units of hereditary information that we have inherited from our ancestors
Why should chromatids be identical?
In order to pass on important DNA information both sides of chromatids must be the same
What does the centromere of a chromosome do?
Attaches the two chromatids to each other
Histone proteins?
Globular proteins that give the chromosome shape and definition as well as protecting the DNA from being broken or lost
Gene?
Sections of DNA. Hereditary units that code for different characteristics
Nucleotide?
Building blocks of DNA molecules(monomers of DNA)
Nucleus?
Where we house DNA in a cell
