What was the purpose of the Congress of Vienna?

To stabilize Europe and restore order. They did this by balancing power (not allowing 1 country to gain excess power, Prussia and England). And containment, creating strong nations around France, and legitimacy, returning old monarchies to power. Prince Metternich of Austria orchestrated the conference.

Plebisetes

A pleb is a yes/no vote from the people. 1st pleb- uses it to create his constitution and legit the 1799 coup. gains power by giving all real power to himself. 2nd pleb- napolean is voted 1st consult for life giving him even more power. 3rd- 1804 nap becomes an emperor, leading to a near dictatorship-like rule and absolute authority.

Nap Mistakes- Battle of Trafalgar

Naval battle Nap lost to Britain, commanded by Horatio Nelson. Resulted in sumprecacy of British navy for a century. Makes it impossible for nap to invade Britain due to bad navy

NM- Continental System

Nov 1806- a blockade to close ports, prevent trading and communication between britian and other European nations. wanted to destroy britian economy. To make Continental euro self sufficient. It failed bc smuggling and no one listened and it was too weak. also failed bc of poor navy, if they didn’t lose Traf it could have worked. Britian makes a blcikage but strong bc of their naval. Destroys centural euro econ.

NM- Peninsular war

Becuse they didn’t listen to his blockade!! Nap invades spain to get to portugal and replaces Spain King with brother Joseph. Triggers gurrilla fighting (hit and run of Spanish citizens). all die spanish British German an Italian fight french

NM- Invasion of Russia

Alexander 1 czar of Russia refuses to stop sale to britian (violates blockade) so nap invades with half a Milly soldiers. russia bruns everything and doesn’t fight and French is like dying with no supplies then Russia kill them and nap army is destroyed

Restoration of order/ values idk

religious order- change- catholism is recognized as majority religooin in France/ no longer anti-gov. keep- Freedom of religion. Legal- keep- Created Napoleonic code- all citizens are equal. social- promoted officials based off merit not just social status to have people of all backgrounds a chance.
