What is the "memory palace" (method of loci) technique?

A memorisation technique dating to ancient Greece: mentally place items you want to remember at specific locations along a familiar route or inside a familiar building. To recall, mentally walk the route and "see" each item at its location. Works because the brain's spatial and navigational memory (hippocampus) is exceptionally strong — it encodes location automatically. Used by memory champions to memorise decks of cards, long numbers, and speeches in minutes.

How do you build a memory palace?

1) Choose a familiar location (your home, school route, a building you know well). 2) Establish a fixed route through it with clear "stations" (front door, hallway, kitchen table, sofa, etc.). 3) Convert each item you want to remember into a vivid, bizarre, sensory image. 4) Place each image at a station in an exaggerated, memorable way. 5) Walk the route mentally to review. The more ridiculous and sensory the image, the better it sticks — boring images fade, bizarre ones don't.

What is "spaced repetition" and why does it beat cramming?

Based on the "forgetting curve" (Ebbinghaus, 1885): memory decays exponentially but is restored stronger each time you review just before forgetting. Cramming reviews everything at once — spaced repetition reviews at the optimal moment. Result: same material requires far less total study time and is retained far longer. Forcing yourself to retrieve information from memory (rather than passively re-reading it) dramatically strengthens the memory trace. The act of struggling to remember, even failing, strengthens the neural pathway more than reading the answer. Practical use: close your notes and test yourself, use flashcards (answer before flipping), explain concepts out loud without looking. Re-reading your notes is the least effective study method — it creates an illusion of knowing.
