Society

A collection of people in a specific territory who share the same culture and work together under the guidance of social norms to maintain harmony.

Sex

An in-born biological concept referring to the biological differences that distinguish humans and other animals into male and female categories.

Male (Biological Characteristics)

Biological sex characteristics defined by an XY chromosomal structure, testosterone hormone production, and reproductive organs consisting of the penis and testes.

Female (Biological Characteristics)

Biological sex characteristics defined by an XX chromosomal structure, estrogen and progesterone hormone production, and reproductive organs consisting of the vagina and ovaries.

Gender

A cultural concept that changes over time, referring to the socially-constructed characteristics, categorized mainly into masculine and feminine, assigned to men and women.

Gender Roles

Culturally-assigned tasks and activities given to males and females, such as males handling physically-demanding activities and females handling domestic activities.

SOGIE

An acronym standing for Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Gender Expression.

Sexual Orientation

A person's pattern of emotional, romantic, and sexual attraction to people of a particular gender (e.g., Heterosexual, Homosexual, Bisexual, Pansexual, and Asexual).

Gender Identity

How a person sees himself or herself, which can correlate with or differ from their assigned sex at birth (e.g., Cis-Man, Cis-Woman, and Transgender).

Gender Expression

The way in which a person expresses his or her gender identity, typically through appearance and behavior (e.g., Masculine, Feminine, and Androgynous).

Gender Inequality

A social phenomenon in which men and women are not treated equally due to discrimination on the basis of sex or gender, causing one sex or gender to be routinely privileged or prioritized over another.

SOGIE Equality Bill

A piece of legislation seeking to prohibit any form of discrimination or harassment against individuals regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
