Basic Components of Phospholipids
Glycerol backbone (3-carbon molecule) or sphinogosine backbone (for sphingolipids), two fatty acid tails(hydrophobic), and a phosphate group attached to the glycerol or sphingosine (hydrophilic).
Basic Components of Glycolipids
similar to phospholipids but have a sugar group instead of a phosphate. Important for cell recognition and signaling.
Basic Component of Cholesterol
Four fused rings (steroid structure)
small polar head (hydroxyl group) and nonpolar hydrocarbon tail
Functions of Lipids
energy storage (triglycerides), membrane structure (phospholipids, glycolipids), signaling (steroid hormones, and lipid messengers)
