what are platelets involved in?
helping the blood clot
What are platelets?
fragments of cells
when are platelets/blood clotting used?
when the skin is broken (like a wound) platelets arrive to stop the bleeding
what do the chemicals released by platelets do?
cause soluble fibrinogen proteins to convert into insoluble fibrin to form mesh across wound
mesh traps red blood cells and forms a clot
clot dries into a sacb
what is the function of a scab?
protects wound
prevents pathogens entering blood
why is blood clotting important?
prevents continued/significant blood loss from wounds
seals wound to prevent entry of microorganisms
remains in place until new skin has grown underneath it
