Eventually needed them to assimilate and become like the common white person.

How did John Adams feel/treat Natives

“Father of the white children”. He ignored Indian treaties and vowed to protect his white citizens first. Probably supported assimilation too and took away most of their land in the Treaty of Fort Wayne. 1809

how did Jefferson feel/treat the Natives?

he was concerned about them, but during his presidency he got rid of tribal lands and tried to erase their culture, whitewashing them. He wanted them to assimilate and have the farmer ideals. Though, the Corps of Discoveery treated the Natives respectfully for the most part

How did Madison feel/treat the Natives?

He sold lots of Native land in the Treaty of Fort Wayne, 1809. He also went against Native leader, Tecumseh’s, values and wishes- to not let the white settlers take over their land. William Henry Harrison and the Battle of Tippecanoe lowkey starting the War of 1812 and such.

He proposed the removal of Natives to Congress- he wanted them west of the Mississippi

How did John Quincy Adams feel/treat the Natives?

He was actually nice to them! Formed many treaties with the Natives in order to gain land, but he made sure they were compensated for that sacrifice, particularly with the protection of the USA.

How did Jackson feel/treat the Natives?

He did not like them. Indian Removal Act of 1830 forced them out quickly and moved them to the west of the Mississippi (carrying out Monroe’s plan) and them having to walk the Trail of Tears. Devastating but he wanted them out quickly and due to greed, hatred, etc.

Creek Chiefs and Treaty of NY

1790, the Creek Chiefs agreed to the Treaty of NY which placed them under the protection of the US and in return they would have their land all to themselves and Americans would stay off. However… the US couldn’t really stop the persistent ones and they went over anyhow,, whoops!

1795- ended Little Turtle’s War where the American politicians wanted the Natives to become farmers and assimilate. W.H.H. pressured them immensely

William Henry Harrison fought against Brothers and won, destroying their hopes of an Indian Confederacy

many Americans had thought that Brit. was helping the Natives attack the Americans. One of the leading causes of the War of 1812 and fueled the American hatred of Natives

Treaty of Ghent

1814, ended the War of 1812, everything was left unchanged between Britain and USA and the NAtives, who supported Britain all throughout, received nothing for being dragged in Brit and USA’s affairs.

pontiac’s rebellion- 1760s. natives wanted to reclaim Ohio River Valley and failed but during peace negotiations smallpox blankets were given.. not cool

1790s creek natives and the treaty of NY which gave them rights to their land and the protection of the us but… they did not end up getting the rights to their land
