Lumbar Hypaxial Muscles
- arise on the ventral surfaces of the
caudal thoracic and lumbar vertebrae and insert on the os
coxae and femur. They lie on one another in several layers.
m. psoas minor
Action: To steepen the pelvis by flexion
of the lumbosacral joint
m. psoas major -
Action: To draw the pelvic limb cranial
by flexion of the hip joint
m. quadratus lumborum
Action: Flexion and fixation of
the lumbar vertebral column
Muscles of the Pelvis and Thigh
Pelvic Muscles
extend between the pelvis and the thigh and include a
lateral and medial group.
Lateral pelvic muscles
are arranged in several layers and include the
tensor fascia lata, three gluteal muscles, and the piriformis.
m. tensor fasciae latae
Action: To flex the hip, abduct the limb and extend the stifle joint.
m. gluteus superficialis
- Action: Extension of the hip joint
m. gluteus medius
Action: Medial rotation of the hip and
prevention of lateral rotation during weight bearing
m. gluteus profundus
- the deepest of the gluteal muscles
m. piriformis
- lies caudal and medial to the m. gluteus medius and
is completely covered by the m. gluteus superficialis.
Medial pelvic muscles
also called the “small pelvic association,” and
include a group of short muscles that lie caudal to the m. gluteus profundus
and the hip joint.
