Social Contract
The agreement between the government and the people, in which the government agrees to protect the rights of the people in exchange for their obedience to the laws established by the government
Rule of Law
Belief that every citizen is equal under the law, no one has special privileges or is above the law
Republicanism
A form of government in which the power is held by the people, either directly or through elected representatives
Popular Sovereignty
The people themselves are the source of all political power
Natural Rights
Universal “God-given” rights that are necessary for all humans, including life, liberty, and the property.
Limited Government
A government whose limits are well-defined and is restrained through the separation of powers and a system of checks and balances
Checks and Balances
Each branch of government has the power to limit (check) the power of the other branches (to balance the power)
Seperation of Powers
The government is divided into multiple branches - each with their own distinct powers and responsibilities
Individualism
Places an emphasis on self-reliance and independence
Free Enterprise
Laissez-faire economics; as little government intervention in economy as possible
Equality of Opportunities
Belief that every American regardless of their race, ethnicity, sex, religion, etc. deserves equal footing to go after life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Due Process
People have the right to fair and reasonable laws, and officials have to follow rules when enforcing the laws and to treat all people in the same way.
