Motor Learning
Learning how to do a task, which involves awareness, attention, and activity when practicing to perform a process (e.g., learning to ride a bike, jump rope, or dance).
Non-associative Learning
A category of learning that includes habituation and sensitization.
Habituation
A type of non-associative learning where an individual's response decreases when exposed to a repeated stimulus.
Sensitization
A type of non-associative learning where an individual's response increases following a stimulus.
Associative Learning
A category of learning that involves linking a stimulus with a response or associating a behavior with a consequence, encompassing classical conditioning and operant conditioning.
Classical Conditioning
A type of associative learning where a stimulus is linked with a response, forming an association between two stimuli so a response is learned to a stimulus (e.g., Pavlov's dog salivating at the sound of a bell expecting treats/food; PTSD symptoms triggered by stimuli related to past trauma).
Operant Conditioning
A type of associative learning where an individual learns to associate a behavior with a consequence, meaning behaviors followed by rewards tend to be repeated while behaviors followed by punishment/aversion tend to be avoided.
Procedural Learning
Implicit learning of tasks that can be performed automatically without explicit or conscious thoughts, developed by practicing a skill multiple times until it is learned.
Declarative Learning
Explicit learning of knowledge that requires conscious awareness, attention, and processes such as reflection, and can be evaluated through mental rehearsal.
Encoding (Declarative Processing)
The first step of processing in declarative learning, involving linking information with a memory structure that is already known.
Consolidation (Declarative Processing)
The step of processing in declarative learning that involves making information stable for storage, which is a longer process that can take hours to days.
Storage (Declarative Processing)
The step of processing in declarative learning that involves storing ideas and memories long-term.
