gained when an individual becomes a lawful member of a country. can be obtained by birth, marriage, decent and naturalisation. as a legal citizen of an country, one would obtain rights and responsibilities.

sense of identity

shared sense of belief that we all collectively come from the same country and that all citizens want to participate in legal affairs of the country to make Singapore a better place to live. people of the same country often have a shared sense of national identity

shared values

principals and beliefs shared by a group of people, it is what shapes our decisions and determines how we exercise our judgement. citizens of a country often share the same set of values.

civic participation

citizens participating in public affairs that they are concerned about. public affairs refers to issues that are of general concern to most people in the country.

maintaining law and order

preserve the safety and security of the country ensuring that citizens can rely on justice in the society.

ensuring the economic and social well-being of citizens

all citizens being able to meet their basic needs and ensuring a good quality of life of citizens. it also ensures that all citizens have the chance to pursue their goals to ensure a satisfactory standard of living.

promoting and protecting the county’s national interests

country’s interests refers to what is needed to ensure its security and well-being. country interests can help promote economic growth within a country and ensure that our country is safe from attacks from other countries through diplomacy and deterrence. Diplomacy refers to the practice of obtaining agreements between countries to cooperate in order to produce results that align with their interests. while Deterrence refers to measures taken by a country to discourage potential aggressors by making it costly for them to attack.

differing needs and interests

society can agree on basic needs such as food and water but may disagree on what is needed to lead a fulfilling life. this is due to a diverse society where people are of different age groups and have differing income levels

differing priorities

in a diverse society, people can agree on what is important, such as healthcare and a clean environment, however they may disagree on which aspect to prioritise

unequal sharing of costs

when a new facility is built, some people may have to bear more of a cost than others. people may agree that the facility being built will be good but will wish for it to be built far from their homes so that they do not need to bear with the inconvenience
