1
New cards

Skeletal system

206 bones, protects organs, produces blood cells

2
New cards

Circulatory system

Transports oxygen through blood

3
New cards

Digestive system

Breaks down food, absorbs nutrients

4
New cards

What is the Endocrine system made up of and what does it do?

Made up of glands that regulate hormones and carries messages to other parts of the body. These glands regulate mood, growth/development, metabolism and reproduction.

5
New cards

What organs are in the Excretory system and what is the function.

Made up of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. It filters the blood and removes liquid waste/extra water from the body (urine, sweat)

6
New cards

What is the Integumentary system and what is it’s function.

Outer shell of an animal body, protects and maintains water

7
New cards

What does the Lymphatic/Immune system include and what does it do?

Includes lymph nodes, helps with immune response

8
New cards

What are the three types of muscles in the Muscular system?

Includes skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles

9
New cards

What does the Nervous system do?

This system sends and receives nerve messages throughout the body.

10
New cards

What does the Reproductive system do?

Allows for reproduction

11
New cards

What does the Respiratory system do?

Facilitates intake and exhaling of oxygen

12
New cards

What is a Tissue?

Group of cells with the same function

13
New cards

What are the two plant organ systems?

Root system (below ground) and shoot system (made up of anything above ground)

14
New cards

What is an Organ?

Group of tissues working together

15
New cards

What is the definition of an Organ System?

Organ systems are made up of more than one organ and perform one or more specific function in the body. The organs in an organ system work together.

16
New cards

What is the definition of an Organism?

Group of systems working together

17
New cards

What do Connective tissues do?

Supports and connects body parts

18
New cards

What do Nervous tissues do?

Receives and sends nerve impulses so that the system can control movements.

19
New cards

How do Muscle tissues move?

Contracts and relaxes for movement

20
New cards

What is another way to say Epithelial tissues?

Lining tissues

21
New cards

What are organs made of?

Made up of tissues that work together to perform a specific task.

22
New cards

What are the 11 human organ systems?

Skeletal, circulatory, digestive, endocrine, excretory, integumentary, lymphatic/immune, muscular, nervous, reproductive, respiratory

23
New cards

What are the 3 plant tissues and what is their function?

Protective (prevents water loss and protects plant) , photosynthetic (transforms the Sun's energy into sugar), transport (contain hollow tub like cells that move food and water through the plant)

24
New cards

What is the shoot system of a plant?

Above-ground part of a plant

25
New cards

What is the root system of a plant?

Below-ground part of a plant

26
New cards

How are lungs and oxygen connected?

Lungs receive oxygen for blood and muscles

27
New cards

How are Buildings and the skeletal system similar?

Both provide structure and shelter

28
New cards

How are Buses and trains and cardiovascular system similar?

Both transport and send things where needed

29
New cards

How are Libraries and nervous system similar?

Both collect and store information

30
New cards

How are the Grocery store and digestive system similar?

Both supply nutrients needed

31
New cards

How are the Police and lymphatic system similar?

Both patrol and protect from harm. The BLANK System patrols the body and ID's substances like bacteria and viruses that can cause disease. It also heals the body when it becomes sick. Police arrest and patrol streets to protect from suspicious people.

32
New cards

What are 5 examples of connective tissues?

Blood, fat, cartilage, tendons, and bone

33
New cards

The spinal cord, brain, and nerves are all made up of BLANK tissues.

Nervous tissue makes up these organs.

34
New cards

What does the epithelial tissue line?

the inside of organs, such as the small intestine in lined by this tissue

35
New cards

What are the 3 types of muscle tissue?

skeletal, cardiac, smooth are the types of tissue.

36
New cards

What is skeletal muscle?

also called striated muscle, it is attached to the skeleton. It is voluntary controlled.

37
New cards

What is cardiac muscle?

The muscle that makes a heart beat. We can't control it (it's involuntary)

38
New cards

What is smooth muscle?

muscle that moves involuntary and without you thinking about it. They keep your eyes focused and help food move through your intestines.

39
New cards

What are the three ORGANS of a plant?

roots, stems, leaves

40
New cards

What is a tumour?

mass of abnormally growing/ cancerous cells

41
New cards

What is paralysis?

the inability to move muscles.

42
New cards

How can the spinal cord cause paralysis?

If the spinal cord is severed below the shoulders, the lower body and legs are paralysed.

If the spinal cord is servered in the neck area, all four limbs can be paralyzed.

When severed nerve impulses from the body are not able to make it to the brain, and vice versa.

43
New cards

How has tech developed to compensate for lack of mobility?

Wheelchairs have been approved, access to building/transportation has been improved as well.

44
New cards

Are viruses living? Why or why not?

Viruses are not living because they can’t make their own energy or divide on their own. They need host cells to reproduce in.

45
New cards

What is the spinal cord?

The body’s spinal cord has cells that transmits nerve impulses from the senses to the brain and carries impulses from the brain to muscles so that they can move. (communication link from brain to body)

46
New cards

What are hormones?

Hormones are chemicals that regulate every bodily function.

47
New cards

List 3 glands and their function:

Glands such as the pituitary, thyroid, and pancreas all produce hormones that carry messages to other parts of the body.

48
New cards

What does the nervous system control?

It also controls behaviour, movement, and processes such as digestion and circulation.
