21 Personnel
A grouping consisting of 2 RBs, 1 TE, and 2 WRs, used in formations like Hover and Twins.
11 Personnel
A grouping consisting of 1 RB, 1 TE, and 3 WRs, used in formations like Queen, King, and Cub.
10 Personnel
A grouping consisting of 1 RB, 0 TEs, and 4 WRs, used in formations like Cobras and Rocket.
12 Personnel
A grouping consisting of 1 RB, 2 TEs, and 2 WRs, used in formations like Packer, Duke, and U.
Personnel Grouping Memory Trick
The first digit equals the number of RBs, and the second digit equals the number of TEs. Whatever is left of the 5 skill spots are the WRs.
Hover / Hover Split / Hover Over
21 personnel formations where X and Z are out wide, H is attached, and A(back)/B(back) change alignments behind, split, or over the ball.
Queen / King
11 personnel formations out of Pistol, Gun, or Over set where J is the 3rd WR/slot.
Cub
A 21 personnel formation where H is flexed away and X/J are stacked or near each other to a side.
Cobras / Rocket
10 personnel (4 WRs) formations where W is the extra WR and J is a slot, occurring in Gun or Over run-game alignments.
Packer / Duke / U
12 personnel formations where there are 2 TEs (Y and one of X/Z lined up in-line).
MOF (Middle of Field) Normal Split
A WR split halfway between the hash and the numbers.
Hash Normal Split
A WR split where the receiver aligns directly on the hash mark.
Look (RPO)
A single receiver turns to the QB for a quick 'now' throw; read left to right.
Smoke (RPO)
The outside WR steps back for a now throw while the inside WR blocks the corner.
Bubble (RPO)
The outside WR blocks the corner or most dangerous defender while the inside WR runs the bubble.
Glance (RPO)
A single receiver runs a 5-step slant.
Glance Flash (RPO)
The slot runs a slant while the inside/outside receivers run go's or hitches.
Man Protections (Lou / Ray Lou, Scat)
The line takes down linemen and the Mike LB, while the backs take outside LB-to-secondary rushers.
Half Slide (Red/Black)
Protection where the line splits into a zone side and a man side based on the called direction.
Full Slide / Quick Slide (Ricky-Lucy)
Protection where everyone gap-blocks to the call side, with each lineman taking whoever shows in their specific gap.
Zone (Run Concept)
An inside zone run where the line has playside gap rules and the RB reads the double team (cage) or backside cutoff.
Slice (Run Concept)
A gap or man scheme featuring a slice block across the formation.
Stretch/Force (Run Concept)
An outside zone run where the O-line reaches horizontally and the back presses the edge.
Mash (Run Concept)
A gap scheme consisting of down blocks and a puller.
Cover 0
An all-out man coverage with no deep help, usually tied to a blitz.
Cover 1
Coverage with one deep middle defender (usually the FS) and man coverage everywhere else.
Cover 2
Coverage with 2 deep halves (both safeties) and 5 underneath zone defenders.
Cover 2 Man
Coverage with 2 deep halves and man coverage underneath.
Cover 3
Coverage with 3 deep thirds (both corners and 1 safety) and 4 underneath zone defenders.
Weak Rotation (Cover 3)
A rotation that moves the weak-side safety down into the box while other players rotate to fill the 3 deep and 4 under zones.
Buzz (Cover 3)
A rotation where the strong safety 'buzzes' down to a shallow hole or curl zone while the corner and FS carry the deep thirds.
Boundary Roll (Cover 3)
A rotation where the short-side (boundary) safety rolls down and the coverage rotates to that side.
Field Roll (Cover 3)
A rotation where the wide-side (field) safety rolls down and the coverage rotates to that side.
Cover 4 (Quarters)
Coverage with 4 deep quarters (both corners and both safeties), where each owns one quarter of the field, and 3 underneath defenders.
Cover 6 (1/4-1/4-Half)
A split-field coverage where one side plays quarters (2 defenders) and the other side plays a deep half (1 defender).
Will (W)
The weak side linebacker.
Mike (M)
The middle linebacker.
Sam/Strike (S)
The strong side linebacker, sometimes played by a safety in the box.
