Motor Control
The ability to regulate or direct mechanisms to movement.
Motor/Action System
A system behind motor control where the brain controls muscles and joints for deliberate movement.
Sensory/Perception System
A system behind motor control where the brain processes sensory inputs, such as determining where we are in space.
Cognitive System
A system behind motor control involving attention, planning, decision making, emotional factors, and the intention of movement (why).
Discrete Movement Task
A movement task with a recognizable beginning and end (e.g., standing up from a chair or lying down).
Continuous Movement Task
A movement task where the end point is decided by the person (e.g., walking or running).
Closed Movement Task
A movement task performed in fixed or predictable environments (e.g., walking on a level surface in a room).
Open Movement Task
A movement task that requires adaptation in a changing or unpredictable environment (e.g., dodgeball).
Stability Task
A movement task performed with a non-moving base of support.
Mobility Task
A movement task that requires moving the base of support (e.g., walking, running, or hopping).
Manipulation Task
A movement task that involves movement of the upper extremities (e.g., picking up an object).
Nonmanipulation Task
A movement task that does not involve specific movement of the upper extremities (e.g., walking or sitting).
