Describe the process of the gill-withdrawal reflex in Aplysia

  1. Tactical stimulus of siphon activates sensory neurons

  2. Sensory neurons synapse and excite motor neurons that innervate the gill.

  3. If motor neuron is excited above threshold, it will fire and excite the muscles that contract the gill.

  • repeated stimulation of the siphon leads to much smaller contraction of the gill-withdrawal muscles through decreased neurotransmitter release onto the gill muscles
