Alloantibodies
naturally occurring antibodies
Dog blood types
Over a dozen but major groups are:
DEA 1
DEA 3
DEA 4
DEA 5
DEA 7
DEA: dog erythrocyte antigen
Dog blood transfusions
DEA 1 elicits the strongest antigen response and causes more transfusion complications
approx. 50% of dogs are positive for DEA 1
Cat blood types
A, B, or AB
very few cats have AB blood, most U.S cats have A blood
Type B may be found in purebreds and geographical areas like Australia
Horses blood types
More than 30 types
Tube method blood typing
requires antisera (antibodies specific for each possible blood type of a given species)
Not practical for large animal blood typing
Card agglutination blood typing
rapid and accuarate blood typing
there is a positive control which will agglutinate to show test works and then the test with the patient blood and DEA 1 compound to show if patient blood reacts

Immunochromatographic assay
control band detects separate antigens on RBCs

Crossmatching
can be done if antisera is unavailable
two types: Major and minor crossmatching
Major- Few drops of serum from recipient are added to a few drops of prewashed pRBCs (packed red blood cells = plasma removed RBCs)
Minor- A few drops of serum from donor are mixed with washed pRBCs from recipient
