Four physical states of matter
Gas, liquid, solid, and plasma.
Kinetic particle theory
A theory based on the idea that gases consist of particles in continuous random motion, explaining gas laws, the composition of liquids and solids, and interconversion between states.
Gas pressure
The pressure exerted by a gas resulting from the collisions of its particles with the walls of the container.
Gas particle collisions
Collisions between gas particles that do not involve any loss or gain of energy due to friction at constant temperature.
Inter-particle forces in gases
Attractive forces between gas particles that are assumed as negligible because the particles are widely apart at low pressure.
Average kinetic energy of gas particles
The energy of gas particles that is directly proportional to the temperature measured on the kelvin scale and is identical for all gases at the same temperature.
Liquid state
A physical state in which particles are quite close together and move in all possible directions without fixed positions or shape, but maintain a fixed volume and level due to inter-particle forces.
Solid state
A physical state that may consist of ions, atoms, and molecules, where inter-particle forces are so strong that particles remain arranged in fixed positions.
Movements of molecules in a gas and a liquid
The three types of movements shown simultaneously by molecules in a gas and a liquid: translational, rotational, and vibrational.
