Comfort
A state of well-being where the person has no physical or emotional pain and is calm and at peace.
Pain
A subjective sensation meaning to ache, hurt, or be sore, which serves as a warning from the body signaling tissue damage.
Fifth Vital Sign
A term often used to describe pain because it signals tissue damage and requires assessment alongside temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
Acute pain
Pain that is felt suddenly from injury, disease, trauma, or surgery.
Chronic pain
Also known as persistent pain, it continues for a long time (months or years) or occurs off and on.
Radiating pain
Pain felt at the site of tissue damage and in nearby areas.
Phantom pain
Pain felt in a body part that is no longer there.
Distraction
A nursing measure for pain relief that involves changing the person’s center of attention.
Relaxation
The state of being free from mental and physical stress.
Guided imagery
A nursing measure for comfort and pain relief that involves creating and focusing on an image.
Back massage
A comfort measure that lasts 3 to 5 minutes, relaxes muscles, and stimulates circulation.
Circadian rhythm
A daily rhythm based on a 24-hour cycle that includes a sleep-wake cycle.
NREM sleep
Non-REM sleep, which is the phase of sleep where there is no rapid eye movement.
REM sleep
The phase of sleep characterized by rapid eye movement.
Tryptophan
A protein that tends to help a person sleep.
Insomnia
A chronic condition in which the person cannot sleep or stay asleep all night.
Sleep deprivation
A condition where the amount and quality of sleep are decreased and the sleep is interrupted.
Sleepwalking
A sleep disorder where the person leaves the bed and walks about with no memory of the event upon awakening.
Precipitating factors
Factors that cause pain to occur.
CMS
Abbreviation for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
Orthostatic hypotension
A potential side effect of drugs ordered by doctors to control or relieve pain.
