One feature of STRs is high heterozygosity - what is this?
Highly variable throughout the population
One feature of STRs is regular repeat unit - what is this less prone to?
Less prone to artefacts
One feature of STRs is distinguishable alleles - what does this mean?
Easy to interpret
One feature of STRs is robust amplification - what does this mean?
reproducible results
Name 4 advantages to STR’s?
Occur frequently in genome, easily amplified by PCR, both alleles are very similar in size, many STRs have been characterized and studied
What are the lengths possible for repeat?
Dinucleotide, trinucleotide, tetranucleotide, penta and hexa nucleotides.
What is simple STR?
Where each repeat unit is identical in sequence and length
What is compound STR?
Where there are 2 or more adjacent simple repeats
What is complex STR?
Where there are several units of varied unit length
What is an STR microvariant?
Allele that has an incomplete repeat unit
Most STRs used in SGM+ are tetrameric repeat units - why is this?
Tetramers more stable than larger repeats, less prone to enzyme slippage during amplification than smaller repeats, less prone to amplification artefacts.
What are 5 factors that SGM+ loci are specifically selected on?
To have high discriminating power, have size range, can be co-amplified, have good amplification fidelity, and genetically independent
What does Amelogenin gene encode for?
Protein in tooth enamel
