A device invented by Samuel Morse in 1838 that allowed for long-distance communication.
Transcontinental Railroad
Railroad that connected the East and West coasts of the United States, built mainly by Union Pacific and Central Pacific companies.
Robber Barons
Wealthy railroad owners accused of exploiting their power for personal gain, forming monopolies and fixing prices.
Homestead Act
Legislation that provided 160 acres of land to settlers for a fee, encouraging westward migration.
Sand Creek Massacre
An 1864 incident where the U.S. Army attacked a peaceful Cheyenne camp, resulting in the deaths of over 400 Cheyenne.
Political Machine
A political organization that provides services and jobs in exchange for votes, often corruptly.
Bloody Shirt Campaign
A political strategy used by Civil War veterans to gain votes by reminding voters of their military sacrifices.
Second Treaty of Fort Laramie
A treaty that promised the Lakota Sioux land in South Dakota, later undermined by gold discoveries.
Great Plains
A vast, flat region of North America that is largely treeless and has been subjected to agricultural practices.
Buffalo Soldiers
African American soldiers who served in the U.S. Army during the Indian Wars, often facing discrimination.
Whiskey Ring
A group of government officials who were involved in a scheme of falsifying tax reports related to whiskey taxes.
Wheat Belt
A region of the Great Plains known for its production of wheat, especially drought-resistant varieties.
Bureau of Indian Affairs
A government agency responsible for the administration of Indian affairs and the management of reservations.
