Independent Variable (IV)
The variable that is manipulated in an experiment to observe its effect on the dependent variable.
Dependent Variable (DV)
The variable that is measured in an experiment; it responds to the independent variable.
Random Assignment
A method used to ensure that each participant has an equal chance of being assigned to any group in an experiment.
Attribute Variable (AV)
An inherent characteristic of a participant that cannot be manipulated.
Operational Definitions
Detailed definitions of the variables used in a study, ensuring other researchers can replicate the study.
Quasi-experiment
A research design that does not involve random assignment, limiting the ability to claim causation.
Validity
The extent to which a test measures what it claims to measure.
Reliability
The consistency of a measure; a reliable measure produces the same results under consistent conditions.
Meta-analysis
A statistical technique that combines the results of multiple studies to identify overall patterns.
Causation
The action of causing something; in research, it refers to establishing a cause-effect relationship.
