What occurs in ionic bonding?
Electrons transfer from 1 atom to another leaving two charged ions
Describe the ions formed from ionic bonding?
Both have full shells and are stable
What is the ionic bond made from?
Strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions
How is the ionic bond made?
Oppositely charged ions attracting each other creating the ionic bond
What do the strong electrostatic forces create in the ionic bond?
Crystal lattice structure
What is the larger ion in the ionic bond?
Anion -> gains electrons
What is the smaller ion in the ionic bond?
Cation -> Loses electrons
Describe the difference between crystal lattices which have 1+ charge and crystal lattices with 2+ charge?
2+ charge lattices have smaller crystal lattice structure as more attracted
Why don’t ions collapse into eachother?
Ions come to EQM when attractive force of net charges (positive proton + negative electrons) balance the repulsive forces (2 nuclei and electron clouds)
Describe the electron density map between 2 ions?
Electron density is 0 -> Have separate existence in ionic lattice
