Judiciary Act of 1789
- helped establish the Judicial Branch by setting the number of judges on the Supreme Court and created certain courts and systems that would make up the Judicial Branch

Whiskey Rebellion
- occurred when Congress passed an excise tax on whiskey and corn farmers rebelled against the government. The rebellion was successfully ended by the federal militia and it proved that the federal government was actually capable of enforcing the law
Neutrality
during the French Revolution, Americans were divided over whether or not they should help the French fight the British. George Washington decided not to get involved and not to support either side - choosing not to support either side is called neutrality
Pinckney’s Treaty
- treaty between America and Spain that settled the boundaries of Florida, opened access to the Mississippi River to the United States, and Spain gave up their claims to land East of the Mississippi River
Treaty of Greenville
- treaty that purchased land from a group of Native people and also promised them a yearly payment of $10,000. This treaty inspired other similar treaty with other Native groups in the future
Jay’s Treaty
- treaty that was an agreement between the British and Americans where the British agreed to remove soldiers from the Northwest Territory of the United States and the Americans would let the British continue their fur trading business on the American side of the Canadian border
Partisanship
- when people are more loyal to their political party over the good of the country as a whole
XYZ Affair -
unofficial two year war between the French and the Americans where both sides seized each other’s ships
Alien and Sedition Acts
- acts that were passed because Americans were worried that French spies were trying to move to the U.S. and overthrow the government. Many people thought the acts were very unfair
Louisiana Purchase
- large territory purchased from France that doubled the size of America. This purchase was called
Impressment
when the British were seizing American ships and drafting the American passengers into British military service
Tecumseh
Native chief who wanted to form a confederacy of Native tribes and ally with the British to fight against the Americans
Andrew Jackson
- became famous through his success in the War of 1812 where he defeated the Natives and the British in the South. He would also later become president
Treaty of Ghent
- ended the War of 1812
