Why of Where
The foundational question in geography that focuses on explaining why spatial patterns, objects, and processes are located in specific places.
Spatial Thinking
The ability to reason about objects in space and analyze spatial patterns using analytical and creative skills to model systems, visualize data, design networks, and forecast changes.
Absolute Location
The precise, fixed position of a place on Earth's surface identified by exact coordinates, such as 40.7128oN,74.0060oW.
Relative Location
The position of a place expressed in relation to other surrounding places or spatial markers.
Place
A location on Earth defined by its unique physical features (climate, terrain, resources) and human characteristics (culture, language, population) that give it distinct meaning.
Time-Space Compression
The process by which modern communication and transportation technologies decrease the time distance between distant places.
Population Density
A measurement of population distribution calculated by the formula: Population Density=Total AreaTotal Population
Choropleth Map
A thematic map that uses color-filled regions to depict spatial data and patterns across defined geographic areas.
Proportional Symbol Map
A thematic map that utilizes symbols, such as circles, of varying sizes to represent quantitative data magnitudes.
Flow Map
A thematic map that uses arrows to illustrate movement, interactions, or connections between locations.
Dot Density Map
A thematic map that represents data attributes using dots or contour lines to show spatial distribution.
Cartogram
A map projection that deliberately distorts the physical size or shape of geographic areas based on a specific variable or statistical attribute.
Map Projection
The process or technique of representing Earth's curved three-dimensional surface on a flat two-dimensional surface.
Ratio Scale
A map scale represented as a numerical ratio or fraction, such as 1:25,000, showing the direct relationship between map distance and Earth distance.
Written Scale
A verbal expression of map scale that describes the relationship between map distance and real-world distance, such as 1inch equals 1mile.
Graphic Scale
A visual scale bar marked on a map that provides a direct reference for measuring distances on Earth.
Mercator Projection
A rectangular map projection useful for navigation due to accurate shapes and directions, though it severely distorts landmass sizes near the poles.
Robinson Projection
A compromise map projection designed to visually balance distortions across shape, size, distance, and direction, making it useful for general world maps.
Cylindrical Projection
A projection family centered around the equator that displays the entire Earth but incurs large size distortions near the polar regions.
Conical Projection
A map projection family that minimizes distortion at mid-latitude and high-latitude zones.
Azimuthal Projection
A map projection family centered on a single point, offering optimal accuracy for polar regions.
Latitude (Parallels)
Horizontal grid lines measuring distance north or south from the Equator (0o), ranging from 0o to 90oNorth and 0o to 90oSouth.
Longitude (Meridians)
Vertical grid lines measuring distance east or west from the Prime Meridian (0o), ranging from 0o to 180oEast and 0o to 180oWest.
Prime Meridian
The reference meridian defined as 0o longitude, which passes through Greenwich, England.
Geographic Data
Any information or dataset that is linked to a specific location on Earth's surface.
GPS (Global Positioning System)
A satellite-based navigation network that delivers precise coordinates, altitude, speed, and time data.
Remote Sensing
The collection of earth surface data from above using satellite or aerial imaging to monitor environmental and structural changes over time.
GIS (Geographic Information System)
A computer software system designed to store, manage, overlay, and analyze spatial data in thematic layers (such as points, lines, and polygons).
Spatial Information
Data concerning physical locations and the spatial relationships between features, consisting of geometric, topographic, imagery, attribute, network, and temporal data.
Geometric Data
Spatial information represented digitally using points, lines, and polygons.
Attribute Data
Non-spatial contextual information linked to geographic locations, such as names, numerical values, or categories.
Census Data
Government-collected population snapshot data containing demographic, education, employment, and housing statistics.
Distance Decay
The principle stating that the level of interaction, memory, or impact between two locations or events decreases as distance or time increases.
Diffusion
The process through which ideas, practices, cultural traits, technologies, and diseases spread from one location to another.
Relocation Diffusion
The spread of cultural practices, ideas, languages, or religions caused by the physical movement of people from one place to another.
Expansion Diffusion
The spread of an idea or innovation outward from a hearth while continuing to develop and adapt locally.
Hierarchical Diffusion
A form of expansion diffusion where innovations spread outward from a central, influential person or core node of power.
Contagious Diffusion
A rapid, widespread form of expansion diffusion that spreads across a population without regard to social boundaries.
Stimulus Diffusion
A form of expansion diffusion in which an underlying idea spreads to a new region but is altered or adapted by local populations.
Renewable Resources
Natural energy and materials that replenish naturally over time, such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, biomass, and water.
Nonrenewable Resources
Finite natural resources in limited supply that deplete with human extraction and use, such as fossil fuels, nuclear energy, and minerals.
Three Pillars of Sustainability
The balanced framework for long-term survival incorporating Environmental, Economic, and Social sustainability, also called the Triple Bottom Line.
Atmosphere
The abiotic gas system surrounding Earth composed of 78% Nitrogen and 21% Oxygen that protects the surface from UV radiation.
Lithosphere
The solid abiotic layer of Earth comprising the outer crust and upper mantle.
Hydrosphere
The abiotic system containing all of Earth's liquid, frozen, and gaseous water sources, including rivers, oceans, and groundwater.
Geosphere
The deep abiotic structural layers of Earth encompassing the mantle and core.
Biosphere
The global system composed of all living organisms and their complex ecological interdependencies.
Scales of Analysis
The operational level or geographic lens (Individual, Local, Regional, National, Global) applied to investigate spatial patterns and identify root causes.
Regional Analysis
The geographic study of a specific region's physical, economic, social, and cultural characteristics and patterns.
Toponym
The proper name given to a place on Earth, often reflecting its physical features, historical context, or linguistic origin.
Site
The physical attributes and internal characteristics of a location, including climate, water availability, topography, vegetation, and natural resources.
Situation
The location of a place relative to surrounding environmental features, economic connections, and transportation networks.
Formal Region
A spatial area marked by a uniform physical, cultural, or administrative characteristic present throughout the entire region.
Functional Region
A spatial area structured around a central node or hub and organized by active flows of transportation, commerce, or communication.
Vernacular Region
A spatial area defined by shared regional identity, personal perceptions, and cultural sense of place rather than official boundary lines.
