Joints
Articulations of bones that hold bones together and allow for mobility.
Synarthroses
Immovable joints.
Amphiarthroses
Slightly moveable joints.
Diarthroses
Freely moveable joints.
Fibrous Joints
Generally immovable joints where bones are connected by fibrous tissue.
Cartilaginous Joints
Joints that are immovable or slightly moveable and connected by cartilage.
Synovial Joints
Freely moveable joints.
Sutures
Fibrous joints only between bones of the skull.
Syndesmoses
Joints where bones are connected by ligaments only.
Gomphoses
A 'peg-in-socket' fibrous joint; the only example is a tooth with its socket.
Synchondroses
Cartilagenous joints where hyaline cartilage unites the bones and are immoveable.
Symphyses
Cartilaginous joints where fibrocartilage unites the bones and are slightly movable.
Synovial Fluid
Fluid found in the joint cavity of synovial joints.
Bursae
Flattened fibrous sacs lined with synovial membranes and filled with synovial fluid, associated with synovial joints.
Tendon Sheath
Elongated bursa that wraps around a tendon.
Bursitis
Inflammation of a bursa usually caused by a blow or friction.
Tendonitis
Inflammation of tendon sheaths.
Arthritis
Inflammatory or degenerative diseases of joints.
Osteoarthritis
Most common chronic arthritis, probably related to normal aging processes.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
An autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the joints.
