Separation Process
The interaction of different sample components with the stationary phase causing components to elute at different times, resulting in distinct peaks in a chromatogram.
Sample Injection
The initial step where a small amount of the sample mixture is injected into a column containing stationary phase material.
Mobile Phase
A liquid solvent that carries the sample through the column, which can be a mixture of solvents with varying proportions to optimize separation.
Stationary Phase
The material packed in the column that interacts differently with various components of the sample, leading to separation based on polarity, size, and chemical affinity.
Detection
The process of identifying and measuring the components as they exit the column, commonly using UV-visible spectrophotometers, fluorescence detectors, and mass spectrometers.
Data Analysis
Examination of the chromatogram to identify and quantify the different substances present in the sample.
