What is the function of desmosomes in animal cells?
Act like spot welds between adjacent epithelial cells, ensuring that cells in organs and tissues stretch and remain unbroken.
What proteins are involved in desmosomes?
Cadherins, which are adhesion proteins found on the membranes of both cells that interact to hold them together.
Where are intracellular receptors located?
On the inside of the cell.
What type of ligands usually bind to intracellular receptors?
Small and hydrophobic hormones.
What happens after a hormone binds to an intracellular receptor?
The receptor-hormone complex enters the nucleus and regulates gene activity.
What are the three domains of cell-surface receptors?
Extracellular, hydrophobic, and intracellular.
What is the function of ligand-gated ion channels?
Open in response to the binding of a ligand.
What do G-protein-coupled receptors bind to?
GTP to hydrolyze GDP.
When is a G-protein-coupled receptor active?
When GTP is attached.
What is the role of intracellular domains in enzyme-linked receptors?
Associated with enzymes
