Brainstem

Houses most functional centers of the cranial nerves and transmits somatosensory impulses.

Cranial Nerves

Nerves that emerge directly from the brain, responsible for functions such as sensory and motor signaling.

Bell's Palsy

A condition resulting from CN VII (facial nerve) lesion, causing drooping of face muscles.

Medulla Oblongata

Part of the brainstem located between the pons and spinal cord, involved in various functions including cranial nerve nuclei management.

Pons

Segment of the brainstem that connects the midbrain and medulla, containing cranial nerve nuclei important for facial expressions.

Midbrain

Region of the brainstem located between the forebrain and pons, containing structures such as the cerebral aqueduct.

Reticular Formation

A network of neurons located in the brainstem, involved in regulating arousal and important functions across the CNS.

Cerebellar Peduncles

Bundles of nerve fibers connecting the cerebellum to the brainstem, essential for motor coordination.

Oculomotor Nerve (CN III)

Cranial nerve responsible for eye movements and pupil constriction.

Trochlear Nerve (CN IV)

Cranial nerve involved in the movement of the superior oblique muscle of the eye.

Vestibulocochlear Nerve (CN VIII)

Cranial nerve responsible for hearing and balance.

Hypoglossal Nerve (CN XII)

Cranial nerve that controls tongue movements.

Fourth Ventricle

Cavity located between the cerebellum and brainstem, filled with cerebrospinal fluid.

Cerebral Aqueduct

Narrow passage that connects the third and fourth ventricles, allowing CSF flow.

Gracile Tubercle

Structure on the dorsal side of the medulla that relays sensory information to the brain.

Cuneate Tubercle

Similar to the gracile tubercle, it relays sensory information but from the upper body.

Posterior Cranial Fossa

The cavity located at the posterior base of the skull that houses the cerebellum.

Clivus

Sloping structure on the base of the skull that supports the brainstem.

Accessory Nerve (CN XI)

Cranial nerve that innervates the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles.
