pH
A scale that measures the acidity or basicity of a solution, ranging from 1 to 14.
Neutral pH
A pH level of 7, indicating a balance between acid and base.
Acidic
A solution with a pH level under 7.
Basic
A solution with a pH level over 7.
Homeostasis
The body's attempt to maintain a stable internal environment, including a pH between 7.35 and 7.45.
Right Upper Quadrant
Contains the right lobe of the liver, gallbladder, right kidney, small intestine, large intestine, and head of the pancreas.
Left Upper Quadrant
Includes the stomach, spleen, left lobe of the liver, pancreas, left kidney, and large intestine.
Right Lower Quadrant
Houses the appendix, cecum, right ovary, right ureter, and right spermatic cord.
Left Lower Quadrant
Contains the small intestine, large intestine, left ovary, left ureter, and left spermatic cord.
Unilateral
Pertains to one side.
Bilateral
Pertains to two sides.
Dexrad
Towards the right side.
Sinistrad
Towards the left side.
Supine
Lying facing up.
Prone
Lying face down.
Ipsilateral
Referring to the same side.
Contralateral
Referring to the opposite side.
Superficial
Towards the surface of the body.
Deep
Away from the surface of the body.
Proximal
Near the trunk of the body.
Distal
Far from the origin or furthest from the trunk of the body.
Midsagittal Plane
A plane that separates the body into equal right and left halves.
Coronal Plane or Frontal Plane
Divides the body into front and back portions.
Transverse Plane
Divides the body into upper and lower halves horizontally.
Prefix
A part of a word found at the beginning.
Suffix
A part of a word found at the end.
Root
The foundation of a term.
Combining vowel
A vowel that links a root to a suffix or another root.
