Abdominal ultrasound
A diagnostic procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to provide visualization of the internal organs of the abdomen, including the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, and ureters.
CT of the abdomen
A painless, noninvasive x-ray procedure, also known as computerized tomography, that produces an image created by a computer representing a detailed cross section of the tissue structure within the abdomen.
MRI
A diagnostic procedure that uses a powerful magnetic field to form highly detailed images of abdominal organs and structures in thin, cross-sectional slices.
Cholecystography (Oral)
A diagnostic visualization of the gallbladder through x-ray imaging following the oral ingestion of pills that contain a radiopaque iodinated dye.
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
A procedure used to examine the size and filling of the pancreatic and biliary ducts through direct radiographic visualization utilizing a fiberoptic endoscope.
Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)
The process of direct visualization of the lumen of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum using a lighted, fiberoptic endoscope; it is also commonly referred to as an upper endoscopy.
Colonoscopy
The process of direct visualization and viewing of the interior lining of the large intestine using a lighted, fiberoptic instrument called a colonoscope.
Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT)
A hepatocellular enzyme, also known as serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT), that is released into the bloodstream in elevated amounts as a specific marker for liver dysfunction.
Serum Bilirubin
The measurement of the level of bilirubin in the serum, which is a pigment produced as a natural result of the breakdown of old red blood cells.
Liver biopsy
A diagnostic procedure where a small piece of liver tissue is obtained for microscopic examination by inserting a specially designed needle directly into the liver through the abdominal wall.
