4 functions of the oral cavity
Digestion, speech, taste, protection
Define and describe function of hard palate
Bony front portion of the roof of the mouth. Separates the oral cavity from the nasal passages.
Function: provides a surface the tongue can press food during chewing
Function of soft palate
Soft back portion, closes off nasal passages during swallowing to prevent food entering the nose.
Name the salivary glands and their location
Parotid (in front of ears)
Submandibular (under jaw)
Sublingual (under tongue)
Functions of saliva
Moisten and breakdown food. Contains enzymes to aid digestion(amylase). Helps protect the teeth and gums by washing away food particles and bacteria
