Bilateria
Animals with bilateral symmetry associated with cephalization.
Cephalization
The process of forming a true 'head' in bilateral animals.
Dorsal
Refers to the upper side or 'back' of a bilaterally symmetrical animal.
Ventral
Refers to the lower side or 'belly' of a bilaterally symmetrical animal.
Anterior
The end of the body that is nearest to the front.
Posterior
The end of the body that is nearest to the back.
Coelomate
An organism whose body cavity is lined with mesodermal tissue.
Acoelomate
An organism that lacks a body cavity.
Pseudocoelomate
An organism that has a body cavity not completely lined by mesoderm.
Ecdysis
The process of molting of the exoskeleton in ecdysozoans.
Phylum Platyhelminthes
The phylum that includes flatworms, which are acoelomates.
Phylum Annelida
The phylum that includes segmented worms, characterized by their coelom.
Phylum Mollusca
The phylum that includes mollusks, characterized by unsegmented bodies and a coelom.
Dioecious
Organisms having separate male and female individuals.
Hermaphroditic
An organism that possesses both male and female reproductive organs.
Subphylum Chelicerata
A subphylum of arthropods that includes spiders and horseshoe crabs.
Subphylum Myriapoda
A subphylum of arthropods that includes centipedes and millipedes.
Subphylum Crustacea
A subphylum of arthropods that includes crabs, lobsters, and shrimp.
Subphylum Hexapoda
The subphylum of arthropods that includes insects.
Class Insecta
The class within Hexapoda that represents the largest number of described species.
Radula
A rasping tongue with chitinous teeth found in most mollusks.
