Vocabulary terms and definitions related to public safety systems, fire incident reporting, and risk assessment based on chapters 1 and 2 of the lecture notes.

Geographic Information System (GIS)

A computer based tool that understands location, analyzing, storing, manipulating, and visualizing geographic information on a map.

National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS)

The standard national reporting system used by U. S. Fire departments to report fires and other incidents to which they respond to maintain records of such incidents in a uniform manner.

Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP)

A U. S. Agency, typically county or city controlled, that is a physical location where emergency telephone calls are received and then routed to the proper emergency services.

Risk

Any factor, human or otherwise, that could lead to an emergency, negatively impacting the people, places, and resources of a community.

Risk assessment

Identification of potential and likely risks within a particular community.

Target hazard facilities

Facilities in either the public or private sector that provide essential products and services to the general public, are otherwise necessary to preserve the welfare and quality of life in the community, or fulfill important public safety, emergency response, and or disaster recovery functions.
