What is the definition of an input device?
A device that accepts data and instructions from the user or from another computer system.
What is the definition of an output device?
A device that receives data from a computer and translates it into audio, visual, textual, or hard-copy form.
How do input and output devices differ in data flow?
Input devices send data to the computer; output devices receive data from the computer.
What are the two types of input devices mentioned in the module?
Keyboard entry and direct-entry devices.
What is keyboard entry?
Data input entered through a keyboard before being sent to the computer.
What is direct entry?
Input that does not require data to be keyed; it creates machinereadable data on paper, or magnetic media, or feeds directly into the CPU.
Name examples of pointing devices listed in the notes.
Mouse (the most common pointing device); keyboard is listed as a separate category; other direct-entry devices include touch screen, light pen, and digitizer tablet.
What is a pointing device and give an example from the notes.
An input device used to move the cursor on screen; example: Mouse.
What is a touch screen?
A display screen that is sensitive to touch, allowing input via finger or stylus.
What is a light pen?
A light-sensitive stylus used to draw on the screen or select options.
What is a digitizer tablet?
A graphics drawing tablet used for sketching; input via a wired or wireless pen or puck.
What is a scanner?
A device that reads text or illustrations from paper and translates them into a form the computer can use.
What is a voice input device?
Audio input devices such as microphones that allow users to speak to the computer.
What is a smart board?
A display screen with a touch-sensitive transparent panel, similar to an interactive whiteboard.
What is a computer monitor?
An output device that displays information visually; includes CRT and LCD types.
What are CRT monitors?
Cathode Ray Tube monitors; older, large and heavy.
What are LCD monitors?
Liquid Crystal Display monitors; common in modern displays and lighter than CRTs.
What is a projector and what types are described?
An optical device that projects images; types include LCD projectors, DLP projectors, and LED projectors.
What is a printer and name some printer types mentioned?
A device that prints text or illustrations on paper; types include Ink Jet (Bubble Jet), Laser, LED printers; line printers are also noted.
What is a speaker?
An output device used to play sound.
What is a storage device?
An apparatus for recording data in a permanent or semi-permanent form.
Name magnetic storage devices listed.
Floppy diskette (1.44 MB), Hard drive, Magnetic tape drive, Magnetic strip.
Name optical storage devices listed.
CD-ROM, Blu-ray Disc, DVD-R/DVD-RW, Zip Disk, Super Disk.
Name flash memory storage devices listed.
USB flash drive, Memory Card (e.g., SD), Memory Stick, SSD (Solid State Drive).
What is online and cloud storage?
Cloud storage; data stored remotely and accessible over a network; often involves network storage and online access.
What is SSD?
Solid State Drive—a flash memory storage device with no moving parts.
What is USB flash drive?
A small, portable storage device connected via the USB port.
What is cloud storage?
Remote data storage accessible over a network, often with tiered (free/paid) options.
What is paper storage and give examples?
Early storage method using paper; includes Punch Cards and OMR (Optical Mark Recognition).
