Double displacement reaction
A chemical reaction where two compounds react and exchange components to form two new compounds.
Precipitation reaction
A reaction that occurs when an insoluble solid forms from the mixing of two aqueous solutions.
Spectator ions
Ions that remain unchanged during a chemical reaction and do not participate in the transformation.
Net ionic equation
An equation that shows only the ions and compounds that are involved in the chemical change, omitting spectator ions.
Gas forming reaction
A type of reaction that produces a gas as one of its products.
Acid-base reaction
A reaction that occurs when an acid reacts with a base to produce water and a salt.
Molecular equation
An equation that shows the complete chemical formulas of the reactants and products without regard for whether they exist as molecules or ions.
Total ionic equation
An equation that shows all of the ions present in a solution before and after a chemical reaction.
Limiting reactant
The reactant that is completely consumed in a chemical reaction, limiting the amount of product that can be formed.
Excess reactant
The reactant that remains after a chemical reaction has gone to completion.
