What is Community Based Corrections?
A broad array of correction programs established in the community to provide alternatives to incarceration.
What is the goal of CBC?
To continue punishment in the community instead of jail/prison
What does CBC represent?
Everything between standard probation and incarceration. Ex. Community service, house arrest, and work release.
What is net-widening?
Officials will place individual offenders in this type of program only because it exists… regardless of criteria.

Why are these programs designed?
To supervise convicted offenders in lieu of incarceration at any levels, which heightened client/offender responsibility and accountability regarding fines, victim compensation, community service and restitution.

Pre-trial release and pre- parole programs

Located in communities, but do not network with any community agencies
Community Based
Programs that are locally operated but are funded by outside sources that network with other agencies and the CJS.
What is the purpose?
Closely track and monitor offenders behavior.

Why was the CC act developed?
To provide money at the local level to plan, develop, and initiate programs (local correctional)
AIM of the act-
To divert prison bound offenders to local programs to receive treatment and assistance.
Target population-
Low risk, non-violent, non-dangerous offenders with little to no risk to society.
CC Act
Alleviates overcrowding and decreases the building of new prisons.
Philosophy
To provide certain types of offenders with rehabilitation and redintegrative environments where personal needs are improved and fulfilled and recidivism rates and decreased.
Primary Purpose
Reintegrate probationers back into the community- although paroles need the services more than probationers
Secondary Purpose
Alleviate overcrowding by accepting less dangerous offenders.
Assessment issues-
The CBC system may be flawed- by accepting dangerous individuals that are nor predicted to be violent but become violent.
False Positive
Considered dangerous because of prior record and conduct but do not pose a danger to others (when they get out and in a program)
False Negative
believed to be non-violent, but turned out to be violent and harm others. These individuals may sabotage programs.
