Defined boundary

A boundary that is agreed upon and fixed

Delimited boundary

The process of drawing a boundary on a map and physically marking it

Demarcated boundary

A boundary that is marked with a physical item(wall,sign,fence)

Antecedent boundary

A boundary that existed before human settlement and creation of the cultural landscape

Relic boundary

A boundary that is no longer active but still impacts the cultural landscape (Great wall of China, The Berlin Wall)

Subsequent boundary

A boundary that develops with the cultural landscape. (Ethnicity, language, political groups)

Consequent boundary

A boundary formed to settle conflict between opposing cultural, ethnic, or political group

Definitional boundary dispute

A dispute that takes place over the interpretation of the original document that defined the boundary

Locational boundary dispute

A dispute over the location of the boundary and the ownership of land

Operational boundary dispute

A dispute on how to manage the boundary and different situations that occur on the boundary

Allocation boundary dispute

A dispute that happens over the use of what is on or in a boundary (natural resources)
