Do you live in Emerald Bend?
Yes, I do. I’ve lived in Emerald Bend my whole life, and 12 years with my wife.
Who is your wife?
City council member Harper Dorais.
Did you have a role in your wife’s campaign?
Yes, I was Harper’s assistant campaign manager.
What were the main issue of the campaign?
Taylor thinks that vacation rentals are helpful to the local economy, but Harper and I disagree.
Do you have any personal connections to this disagreement?
I do. The Gold Standard Inn, the only hotel in Emerald Bend, has been in my family for generations. The rise of vacation rentals has really hurt our business.
How did you support your wife’s campaign?
I went to all of her campaign events.
What notable events did you attend?
I went to the town hall debate on November 11, 2023.
What happened earlier that day?
I didn’t want my nervous energy to wear off on Harper, so I woke up early to deliver flyers down by the lake. I think I got there around 9, but I’m not completely sure because I forgot my phone.
Did you see anyone by the lake?
Yes, I stopped by my friend CJ Costly’s house and chatted for a bit.
What did you do after that?
I decided to head over to the town square to put up flyers, but the main road back is so long and winding so I took a fire road shortcut instead.
What happened when you took this shortcut?
My window was down, and some of the flyers flew out the window. I stopped to collect them, but once I got back in my car, it wouldn’t start.
What did you do about your car?
I have a fair amount of experience with maintenance, so I spent at least an hour trying to fix it. I didn’t know the time because the clock in my car was broken, so I was worried I’d be late to the debate.
Did you eventually figure out the issue with your car?
Yes, I finally realized that the issue was the starter relay. After about another hour, I was able to rig up a temporary fix, but I knew that I would eventually have to fix it permanently.
What did you do once you finished the repair?
I rushed to town hall, and got there around 12:30, but Taylor didn’t seem to be there.
Did you speak to anyone when you got to the town hall?
Yes. Harper came up to me, and I could tell how flustered she was by my absence. I didn’t want to upset her further, so I just told her, “I’m fine, it’s all been taken care of.” I was referring to the fact that I’d passed out flyers that morning.
Did Alexander show up to the debate?
No, they didn’t. At 1 o’clock, we decided to call off the debate.
What happened next?
Around 5:30, Deputy Kim came into the campaign office. They told us that Alexander had been kidnapped, and that was why they’d missed the debate.
Did Deputy Kim tell you anything else?
Yes, they told me that our campaign slogan was written on a Gold Standard Inn pillowcase that was used in the kidnapping.
Did that surprise you?
Yes, but I also know that many guests and employees would have access to our branded pillowcases. Also, about two weeks before the debate, someone broke into the inn and stole a variety of housekeeping supplies, including pillowcases.
Did the Deputy question you personal?
Yes.
What did your conversation entail?
I outlined my day, and told the Deputy that I’d been by the lake putting up flyers and that CJ Costly could confirm by presence. They also asked me about the Gold Standard Inn. It made me uncomfortable, but I explained that the prospect of increased vacation rentals threatened to increase our financial struggles.
Why did it make you uncomfortable?
I didn’t like that Deputy Kim was suggesting my business would be enough for me to commit a crime like this.
Did Deputy Kim question you any other time?
The Deputy questioned me several other times over the course of their investigation about Taylor Alexander’s reports that their captor had said “everything comes back around.”
Did the use of this phrase surprise you?
Yes. I was shocked because it was a sort of catchphrase of mine that I said during many televised interviews.
Who ended up winning the election?
On November 14, Harper one the election, though the circumstances were not those that any of us had wanted.
What happened two days later, on November 16?
I was horrified when Deputy Kim obtained a warrant to search my house and car. I was surprised that they confiscated a receipt from a hardware store that listed some boating supplies I bought. I was planning to take my boat out on the lake.
Now turning your attention to Exhibit E, could you please tell the court what this is?
This is the receipt from the boating supplies I purchased on November 5.
What happened on December 4?
Deputy Kim arrested me for kidnapping.
What happened after you were arrested?
They began questioning me in a small room when we arrived at the station. I said I didn’t want to speak without an attorney. Then the Deputy left the room.
What happened after that?
A few hours later, Deputy Kim told me that Harper had come and asked if I wanted to speak to her. I agreed as I felt scared about being in custody.
How did you feel during your conversation with Harper?
I felt intimidated by the Deputy’s actions. They stood close to me with their hand on their holstered gun, placed a tape recorder on the table, and told me to “lay everything out.” I felt like I was being pressured to admit to something that I didn’t do.
Did you say anything during this interrogation to the Deputy?
I said “I was trying to make sure the family inn could be passed down for generations.”
What did you mean by that?
I meant the inn is very important to me, and I would never do anything to harm the future of the inn or my family.
Finally, Mrs. Gold, did you kidnap Taylor Alexander?
No, of course not. We may have our differences, but I would never do such a thing.
