What is leadership?
The act of influencing others toward a goal.
What are formal leaders?
Those who hold a position of authority and may utilize the power that comes from their position as well as personal power to influence others.
What are informal leaders?
Those without a formal position of authority within the organization who demonstrate leadership by influencing others through personal power.
What are the two broad categories of leader behaviors?
Task-oriented behaviors and people-oriented behaviors.
What are task-oriented behaviors?
Directive behaviors given to employees to ensure organizational goals are met.
What are people-oriented behaviors?
Behaviors that show concern for employee feelings and treat employees with respect.
What are the three types of decision-making styles?
Autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire decision making.
What is autocratic decision making?
A style where leaders make the decision alone without involving employees.
What does situational leadership depend on?
Situational factors such as employee readiness.
What are the four basic situational leadership styles?
Directing, coaching, supporting, and delegating.
What is transformational leadership?
A leadership style that includes charisma, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration.
What is the leader-member exchange (LMX)?
The quality of the relationship between a leader and a follower, which can be high or low.
What defines servant leadership?
A leadership style that focuses on serving the needs of others and developing employees.
What is authentic leadership?
A leadership approach where leaders stay true to their values and are self-aware.
What is abusive leadership?
A sustained display of hostile verbal and nonverbal behaviors toward employees.
What are some statistics about women in leadership?
Women hold only 5% of CEO positions in Fortune 1,000 companies, despite representing 47% of the workforce.
How do leadership traits vary globally?
Leaders in different societies may possess different traits, but some traits may be universal, like honesty and decisiveness.
