Venipuncture
Used to collect large volumes of blood. Three methods include evacuated tube/vacutainer, syringe and needle, and butterfly.
Test Order (Requisition)
Must be an order from a provider. Includes ordering provider, test and test code, diagnosis code, special specimen requirements, patient demographics, and insurance or billing information.
Timed Specimens
Crucial for drug level monitoring, confirming patient medication dose, and compliance.
Fasting
Nothing but water for 8-12 hours prior to testing. Some blood tests are affected by food and/or beverages (triglycerides, glucose)
Basal State
Early morning specimen (after sleep), 12 hours after the last ingestion of food or liquids
Postprandial
After a meal
Antecubital Area Veins
Median cubital (preferred), Cephalic (best choice in obese patients), Basilic (greatest risk of complications)
Tourniquet
Allows for hemostasis. Place 3-4” above the draw site. Max 60 seconds.
Hematoma
Most common complication of venipuncture. Occurs due to failure to apply pressure.
Blood Collection Volume
Use capillary puncture for small volume requirements. Larger volumes use venipuncture.
