Spatial perspective
The study of where things are located and the relationships among places, people, and environments.
Absolute location
The exact position of something on Earth, expressed using coordinates or a specific address.
Relative location
The position of a place described in relation to another place.
Place
A location given unique identity by its physical and human characteristics.
Pattern
The geometric or spatial arrangement of features in space, such as clustered, dispersed, linear, or random.
Process
An action or change over time that produces a specific spatial pattern.
Scale of analysis
The geographic level used to examine a pattern, such as global, national, regional, or local.
Reference map
A map designed to show the locations of many physical or human features.
Thematic map
A map that shows the spatial pattern of one specific topic or variable.
Political map
A reference map showing administrative boundaries, countries, states, cities, and capitals.
Physical map
A reference map showing natural terrain features such as landforms, elevation, and rivers.
Road map
A reference map showing transportation routes, highways, and named places for navigation.
Topographic map
A reference map showing detailed elevation and landform shape using contour lines.
Cadastral map
A reference map displaying property parcels, land ownership boundaries, and divisions; also known as a plat map.
Choropleth map
A thematic map where defined areas are shaded or colored to represent a value, rate, or percentage.
Dot-density map
A thematic map where each dot represents a specific stated number of occurrences.
Proportional symbol map
A thematic map where the size of a symbol varies directly with the quantity being represented.
Isoline map
A thematic map that uses lines to connect data points having the exact same numerical value.
Cartogram
A thematic map in which geographic area sizes are intentionally distorted to represent a statistic.
Flow-line map
A thematic map using lines and arrows to show movement across space, where line width often indicates volume.
Mercator projection
A conformal cylindrical projection that preserves local shape, angles, and direction, but greatly enlarges area at high latitudes.
Gall-Peters projection
An equal-area cylindrical projection that displays landmasses at correct relative sizes but distorts their shapes.
Robinson projection
A compromise world map projection that balances shape, area, distance, and direction distortions for general visual use.
Winkel Tripel projection
A compromise world map projection designed to minimize overall area, distance, and direction distortion.
Goode Homolosine projection
An interrupted equal-area map projection that preserves relative land area by splitting open ocean areas.
Fuller projection
A projection onto an unfolded icosahedron that keeps continents visually intact with unusual orientation; also called a Dymaxion map.
Cylindrical projection
A projection family formed by projecting the globe onto a cylinder, showing minimal distortion at the equator and high distortion at the poles.
Conic projection
A projection family formed by projecting the globe onto a cone, effective for mapping midlatitude east-west regions.
Planar projection
A projection family formed by projecting the globe onto a flat plane touching a single point, frequently used for polar regions; also called an azimuthal projection.
Map scale
The ratio between distance measured on a map and actual distance on Earth's surface.
Quantitative data
Numerical information that can be precisely measured or counted.
Qualitative data
Descriptive, non-numerical information regarding characteristics, qualities, meanings, or experiences.
Primary data
Geographic information gathered firsthand by a researcher through direct observation, interviews, or fieldwork.
Secondary data
Geographic information compiled and published by someone other than the primary user.
Census
An official government enumeration and survey of a population and its demographics.
Field observation
The act of directly viewing, inspecting, measuring, and recording spatial features in a real-world setting.
Landscape analysis
The process of examining and interpreting visible human and physical features of an area to understand underlying processes.
GPS
Global Positioning System; a network of satellites and ground receivers used to determine precise coordinates on Earth.
GIS
Geographic Information System; software designed to capture, store, analyze, layer, and display spatial data.
Remote sensing
The gathering of physical data about Earth's surface from a distance using sensors on satellites, airplanes, or drones.
Satellite imagery
Digital images of Earth collected by artificial satellites orbiting the planet.
Spatial relationship
A degree of connection or interaction between the spatial distributions of two or more geographic phenomena.
Correlation
A statistical or spatial relationship where two variables change in tandem, without establishing that one directly causes the other.
Causation
A relationship in which a change in one factor directly produces a specific effect or change in another factor.
Site
The internal physical and local characteristics of a specific location, such as soil, climate, elevation, and terrain.
Situation
The location of a place relative to surrounding external features, transportation routes, and other locations.
Space
The physical gap, distance, or interval between objects or places across Earth's surface.
Absolute distance
The standard physical distance between two places measured in standard units like miles or kilometers.
Relative distance
A measurement of social, financial, or temporal separation between places, calculated in terms such as travel time or cost.
Distance decay
The principle stating that spatial interaction decreases as physical or temporal distance increases.
Time-space compression
The reduction in time it takes for something to reach another place due to modern transportation and communication technology.
Connectivity
The directness and degree of linkage between places through communication, travel, or trade networks.
Accessibility
The relative ease with which a location can be reached from other places.
Distribution
The spatial arrangement of a feature or phenomenon across a given region, described by density, concentration, and pattern.
Density
The total frequency with which a feature or population occurs within a specified unit of area.
Concentration
The extent of a feature's spread across space, described as closely grouped (clustered) or widely separated (dispersed).
Clustered pattern
A spatial arrangement where objects or features are positioned close together in groups.
Dispersed pattern
A spatial arrangement where objects or features are spread relatively far apart from each other.
Linear pattern
A spatial arrangement where features are organized along a narrow line, such as a river, coastline, or highway.
Human–environment interaction
The reciprocal processes by which human societies depend on, adapt to, and alter their natural environments.
Environmental determinism
The outdated theory that physical environment and climate solely dictate human culture and societal development.
Possibilism
The theory that physical environment sets limitations, but humans have choices and adapt using culture and technology.
Sustainability
The practice of utilizing natural resources in ways that satisfy current human needs without compromising future generations.
Sense of place
The subjective emotional attachments, memories, and personal meanings associated with a location.
Placelessness
The loss of unique local cultural identity, leading to uniform and indistinguishable cultural landscapes.
