Why does heart rate increase during physical activity? (vimp)
During exercise the muscles require more ATP, so the rate of respiration increases. This means more O2 and glucose must be delivered by the blood and more CO2 and waste products must be removed. Therefore, to satisfy this demand the heart rate increases to pump blood faster around the body
What happen if muscles do not receive enough O2
They begin to respire anaerobically producing lactic acid (a.k.a lactate) and releasing less energy.
What does the build up of lactic acid cause
Muscle fatigue and cramps
So what must be done with the lactic acid
It must be transported to the liver to be broken down
What does this process of anaerobic respiration/lactic build up create
An oxygen dept which needs to be repaid after exercise by continued rapid breathing and an increased heart rate
Give the chemical and word equation for this process
Glucose → Lactic Acid + Energy
C6H12O6 → 2C3H6O3 + ATP
