Cycle Time
The total time it takes to complete one cycle of a process or operation.
Throughput
The rate at which a system produces output, typically expressed as units per time.
Idle Time
The amount of time that a resource or entity is not being used or is waiting for work.
Capacity
The maximum amount that an organization can produce or handle in a given time.
Bottleneck
A stage in a process that reduces the overall speed and efficiency of the entire system.
Constraint Management
A management approach focused on identifying and managing the constraints that limit a system's performance.
Theory of Constraints (TOC)
A management philosophy that emphasizes the impact of constraints on overall performance and aims to improve system performance by increasing throughput.
Subordinate
To adjust the operations of non-bottleneck resources to support the needs of the bottleneck resource.
Elevate
To take action to increase the capacity of a bottleneck resource in order to improve throughput.
Drum Buffer Rope
An operational scheduling methodology that aligns production rates with actual demand, balancing flow in a production system.
Utilization
The ratio of actual output to potential output of a resource, expressed as a percentage.
Line Balancing
The process of assigning tasks to workstations in a way that minimizes idle time and maximizes efficiency.
Efficiency
A measure of how well a process performs relative to its maximum potential output.
Balance Delay
The amount of time that a resource is not actively working due to tasks being unevenly distributed among workstations.
