what is an element?
a substance that contains only one type of atom that all have the same number of protons in their nucleus.
what determines what type of atom an element has?
the number of protons
what is an isotope?
atoms with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons
what do different isotopes have?
different masses
what is relative atomic mass?
an average mass is an average mass taking into account the different masses and amounts (abundances) of all the isotopes that make up the element
what is the formula for relative atomic mass?
Sum of (isotope abundance x isotope mass) ÷ sum of abundances of all the isotopes
