What is manifest destiny?

Obvious fate that as the United States spreads across the continent, it will spread its way of life, values, and culture

Missouri compromise or the compromise of 1820

Declared that man was a free state in Missouri was a slave state. The compromise did not allow any new slave states north of Missouri southern border.

Willmot proviso 1846

Leading questions to whether this territory would allow slavery or not the land gain from Mexican American war would remain free from slavery. This caused tension in Congress and the bill failed and kept it from becoming a law.

compromise of 1850

California was admitted as a free state Utah and New Mexico were given the sovereignty to vote if they wanted slavery or not the fugitive slave act was passed punishing anyone who helped a slave escape

Kansas, Nebraska act 1854

Kansas and Nebraska would be able to vote on whether to allow slavery or not
