What does the HMC help reduce the risk of?
Disasters.
Identifies potential risks and assesses impacts so communities and organisations can implement measures to reduce risks.
What does the HMC improve?
Preparedness.
Shows its importance, through developing emergency plans and procedures, conducting drills and stocking up on resources and supplies.
What does the HMC help mitigate?
Impacts of disasters.
e.g. land use planning, early warning systems and other methods to reduce impact of potential hazards.
What does the HMC help build?
Resilience, by learning from past experiences and improving practices, communities and organisations can prepare better.
How does the HMC save lives and property?
Reduces impacts of disasters by implementing measures to reduce risks and prepare, so they can recover quicker.
What is the benefit of it being a cycle?
Takes into account that events recur and spur adaptation/education.
But what may occur during the cycle?
Other hazard events, disrupting it.
But, how is the HMC resource intensive?
Requires time, effort and funding.
Smaller or under-resourced communities may not have the capacity to implement hazard management practices effectively - not applicable to all.
But, what is the HMC overreliant on?
Technology.
Can be useful, but are not always available or reliable.
But, what can make it difficult to develop effective hazard management?
Some hazards, like earthquakes and tornadoes can be difficult to predict accurately.
But, what is limited regarding the HMC?
Limited scope.
Hazard management strategies are often focused on specific types of hazards such as floods or wildfires, and may not address all potential hazards or risks faced by a community.
