ch1 what doe citizenship to mean to me?

legal status

• officially recognised by law

• by descent, naturalisation, marriage

• enjoy certain rights → freedom & privileges

• fulfil obligations

• interpretation of rights → understanding of citizenship

Eg. Rights in respect of discrimination → no SGean → discriminated against on any grounds

Eg. Obligation : 1967 : male citizens & permanent residents → serve NS

L : feel valued as member of country because your wellbeing is taken care of + youre doing a part in contributing to the good of the country → feel connected → sense of citizenship ^^

A sense of identity

• ppl → same country → sense of national identity : connected

• citizens share common spaces, practices, way of life → develop sense of belonging + emotional attachment to country

Eg. survey : 2020 → 1000 SGs → characteristics impt to SG identity → “multiracial & multireligious society“ + “local food & delicacies”

Eg. 2019 : country nomination of hawker culture to UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity : recognised 2020

Eg. All SGeans feel proud when LKY won men’s singles in 2021 BWF

L : feel bonded w fellow citizens as you are able to identify w similar experiences & beliefs → allow citizens to develop a sense of belonging to country, since they see each other as one united country → sense of identity ^^

Shared Values

• values : embraced, seen as impt by grp of ppl

• principals + beliefs : infl a person’s attitudes, thinking & behaviour

• shared values : infl collective decision making & exercise of judgement

Eg. Surveys : 2012, 2015, 2018 : SGeans identify : “care for elderly, care for the disadvantaged, care for the environment, compassion & concern for future generations” → impt values

Eg. 2019 Speech : DPM Heng Swee Keat identifies: openness, multiculturalism, self determination → fundamental values : allow SG progess

L: identify certain values as impt for country → do your best to try uphold those values → punish those who don’t subscribe to those values → develop emotional attachment to country → sense of belonging ^^

Civic participation

• citizens actively participate : public affairs → matters of general concern to society : address societal concerns / help certain groups in country

• civic participation : impt obligation

• participation: citizens / community→ informal / formal → informal : period of time, specific objectives, not registered w gov → formal : devote efforts over sustained period of time, specific needs, interests of society, clear objectives, registered w gov

Eg. Indiv : end lf 2022 : couple hold christmas party for lonely ppl

Eg. Informal : grp of residents in punggol meet and share shit and help each other

Eg. Formal : NGOs + SSAs (Zero Waste Sg → Zero Waste through education + advocacy)
