According to the lecture transcript, how is a parameter defined?
A parameter is the true measure of interest that is somewhere out there in the unknown and cannot be directly observed.
How is a statistic defined in contrast to a parameter?
A statistic is the observable measure that is calculated or repeated on the sample.
When a sample is representative of the population of interest, what happens to the sample statistic for a mean or proportion as the sample size increases?
The sample statistic approaches the population parameter as the sample increases in size.
In the example given in Chapter 1, why can the twenty fifth, fiftieth, and seventy fifth percentiles of midterm grades be directly computed?
Because the data on the entire population (which is just the class) is directly available.
