Functions of the Skeletal System
Supports the body, anchors muscle, protects organs, makes blood, and stores minerals.
Bone Composition
Living cells and minerals: Calcium and Phosphorous.
Joints
The location where 2 bones meet.
Freely movable joints
Categories includes ball and socket, hinge, pivot, saddle, and gliding.
Slightly movable joints
Joined by cartilaginous joints (discs) which act as shock absorbers, such as the vertebrate.
Immovable joints
The type of joints found in the cranium.
Ligaments
Connective tissue that connects bone to bone.
Tendons
Connective tissue that connects muscle to bone.
Sprain
An injury to ligaments and/or tendons occurring when a joint is twisted.
Bursitis
A condition characterized by fluid build-up in joints.
Arthritis
Painful degeneration of movable joints where immune cells attack membranes, weaken cartilage, and deposit bone in its place.
Fractures
Another term for broken bones.
Osteoporosis
A condition characterized by the loss of bone density.
Causes of Female Susceptibility to Osteoporosis
Smaller bones, calcium loss during the menstrual cycle, and decline in sex hormones during menopause.
Osteoporosis Prevention
Regular exercise and a calcium-rich diet in teens and twenties.
Average bone count
The human body contains 206 bones.
Femur
The largest bone in the human body.
Smallest bone
Bone located in the ear.
Ossification
The process of replacing cartilage with bone over time.
